If you are looking for some challenging, shorter flights
in the mountains in questionable weather, then California Express is looking for you!! High-altitude mountain
flying has always been one of the more dangerous activities
GA aircraft undertake each year. Winds are usually fairly
high at higher altitudes, particularly following a large
weather system, The wind then funnels through mountain
valleys, spills through the passes' cracks and crevices,
and mixes with winds from other valleys and winds coming
over the mountains. This can lead to a lot of disturbed
air, and some serious turbulence. To make flying more
challenging, density altitude must also be factored
in. High density altitude leads to decreased aircraft
performance, especially during hot summer days. Density
Altitude is a way of factoring heat, barometric pressure
(and, for absolute accuracy, humidity) and elevation
to determine an equivalent altitude that, at on an atmospheric
standard day, would provide similar conditions. For
instance, on a hot summer day, a 5,000 foot elevation
could very well cause the aircraft to perform much the
same as if it were flying at 8,000 feet. |
