VATSIM Online Center

California Airlines uses the VATSIM network to fly online (no other networks are supported by California Airlines). CAX pilots must be online certifed before they are allowed to connect to VATSIM with the CAX call sign. The VATSIM Online Center contains information for CAX pilots that are pursuing their VATSIM Certification. The mission of the VATSIM Online Center is to mentor pilots in becoming proficient in connecting to the VATSIM network, aviation communications, flight planning and, navigation. Proficiency in these areas are required in order for a pilot to obtain their VATSIM certification.

Once a Cal Air pilot becomes VATSIM certified, they are added to the CAX VATSIM Certified Roster and can log into the VATSIM network with the CAX call sign. CAX pilots that are not VATSIM certified are not allowed to log into the VATSIM network with the CAX call sign. CAX pilots that are not VATSIM Certified may conduct VFR flights on the VATSIM network using only the CAX Trainer aircraft with the NXC trainer call sign (see below).

Non-VATSIM Certified Pilots
CAX pilots that do not have their VATSIM Certification may log into the VATSIM network under the following conditions:
Pilots that are not VATSIM Certified may fly IFR flights online with the CAX call sign only when flying with a Cal Air VATSIM Certified Mentor. If a CAX pilot that is not online certified conducts an IFR flight on the VATSIM network with the CAX call sign with out a mentor flying with them, a verbal warning will be issued to that pilot. If more than three warnings are issued, that pilot will be taken off their CAX hub's roster.

CAX VATSIM Mentor Program
The goal of the CAX mentor program is to prepare pilots for the CAX VATSIM Certification Checkride.

How to Contact a CAX VATSIM Mentor
1. Choose a CAX mentor from the VATSIM roster and contact them by logging into the CAX message forums and using the Private message system
2. You can either set up a time and place to meet on the VATSIM network or you can send private messages to each other about questions that you may have related to the CAX VATSIM Checkride.
3. If a CAX mentor is logged on the VATSIM network, you may log on the network as a CAX Observer Pilot and contact the CAX Online Mentor by sending him a private message.
4. You can also log into the CAX TeamSpeak Voice Server and ask if anyone is willing to help (all CAX pilots are friendly and very willing to assist)
Role of the CAX Online Mentor
1. Assume a teaching role.
2. Answer all questions about XSB, VATSIM, Xplane setup.
3. Lead a newbie on a first flight on VATSIM.
4. Cut down on the embarrassment factor through coaching.
5. Help develop IFR skills on/offline
6. Offer tips to training materials, links, books, etc.
How to Obtain Your CAX VATSIM Certification
ZLA has created a pilot training program that can teach a pilot and certify them in several levels of flight proficiency. CAX works closley with the VATSIM ZLA Certification program to ensure that CAX pilots are amongst the best pilots while conducting online flights on VATSIM.

Here is how the CAX VATSIM Certification Process works
In order to fly in large events with a ton of traffic you must also pass the I4-I7 checkrides. This will ensure that CAX pilots are proficient enough to handle the large traffic generated by these events.

To take any of the ZLA Certification follow these simple steps
  • Log into the VATSIM network
  • Go to the ZLA ATC area
  • Contact a ZLA ATC that is currently online
  • Request to take a ZLA certification.

You can monitor your progess by checking the ZLA Certification roster to see which check rides you have passed.

The staff at ZLA are extremely competent people and you will enjoy this experience.

We urge everyone to takse advantage of this and start flying more on the VATSIM network for the realistic quality. You can practice each trip as many times as you like before you take the test. Just inform the controller if you will be practicing or taking the checkride.
